Memphis police named a suspect Sunday night in the shooting death of Officer Sean Bolton, 33, last night during a routine traffic stop.
Tremaine Wilbourn, 29, was announced by police as the shooter. Wilbourn is on “supervisory release” (for a 121 month sentence) for a bank robbery according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Wilbourn is at large, however a person of interest was taken in to custody Sunday, the AP reported.
Memphis police posted a report on the shooting last night on their Facebook page.
“On August 1, 2015 at approximately 9:18pm Communications was alerted by a citizen through one of our officer’s radios that an officer had been shot in the area of Perkins and Cottonwood. Once officers arrived on the scene they located a MPD Officer who had been shot during what appeared to be a traffic stop.“The officer, 33-year-old Sean Bolton, was transported in critical condition but was later pronounced deceased due to multiple gunshot wounds.“The suspect responsible is still at large and officers are in the area attempting to locate him.“Officer Bolton was hired by the Memphis Police Department in October of 2010.“If anyone knows anything about this incident or knows who is responsible for this murder they should contact Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.”
WMC-TV reported respective $10,000 rewards are being offered by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Memphis city council.
“City council offering a $10,000 reward for this man and U.S. Marshals are offering $10,000 as well. City officials said other agencies may offer a similar reward.“Police said Wilburn was the passenger of a 2002 Mercedes-Benz that Bolton pulled in front of for illegally parking. He got into a brief struggle with Bolton.“Less that two grams of marijuana were found in the car. MPD said they believe officer Bolton was caught in the middle of a drug transaction.“The suspect and the driver both fled the scene following the shooting.“MPD said the driver turned himself in and was released.”
