MARSHALL, MI – A carnival worker from Alabama was stabbed by a co-worker in Marshall early Thursday, officials said.

The men, ages 31 and 38, were staying in campers in the area of 720 Fair Street at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds in Marshall.

Police were dispatched to their living area at 4:30 a.m. Aug. 20 for a reported stabbing, according to a statement from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office.

Police said they arrived to find the 31-year-old Alabama man had been stabbed in the chest and leg by the 38-year-old Florida man. Both men were intoxicated, according to the statement.

Police believe the men got into an argument while in downtown Marshall earlier that evening and the dispute turned violent when the men returned to their living area.

The victim was transported to Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall with injuries that were not considered life threatening, police said.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and lodged at the Calhoun County Jail on a charge of attempted murder.

Calhoun County sheriff's Detective Steven Hinkley said both men were independent carnival workers in town for the 167th annual Calhoun County Fair.

Police said the incident took place in "a living area exclusively designed for carnival employees" that was "far away from any of the public areas" at the fairgrounds.

"This was an isolated incident. The public was never in danger and this was a secluded living place," Hinkley said.

The victim was listed in stable condition at the time of the release around noon Thursday.

The sheriff's office was assisted at the scene by the Marshall Police Department.
