The man who delighted children with his Batman costume and gained viral fame after being pulled over by Montgomery County police in his Lamborghini “batmobile” in 2012 died Sunday night in a traffic incident.
Maryland State Police said Lenny B. Robinson, 51, was killed when he was struck by a driver on the side of I-70 near Hagerstown. Police said Robinson was driving his custom-made batmobile when he pulled over due to engine trouble and ended up stopped partially in the fast lane of eastbound I-70 just west of Big Pool Road. Robinson and his vehicle were then struck by a Toyota Camry around 10:30 p.m.
Police said Robinson, of Owings Mills, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Camry was identified as Mark Karman, 39, of Charlottesville, Virginia. Karman was not injured in the incident, according to police.
Since police stopped Robinson in 2012, his local fame grew and he was coined the “Route 29 Batman” after the road where police pulled him over. He became known as a true force for good—a man who had made a fortune in the commercial cleaning business, but then decided he’d rather spend his time entertaining sick children as Batman at hospitals than continuing to grow his fortune.
Robinson’s Facebook page contains many photos of him visiting hospitals around the country, either in the black Lamborghini or his vintage batmobile. A photo taken Friday shows Robinson filling up the vintage batmobile at a gas station in Kanawha City, West Virginia.
A state police spokeswoman said detectives are investigating the crash, which typically takes at least 30 days. She said results of that investigation will be sent to the state’s attorney’s office, which will determine if charges will be filed in the case.
Police in Montgomery County were just learning of Robinson's death Monday morning.
"It's very tragic," Rick Goodale, a spokesman for Montgomery County Police said Monday. "We're kind of in shock."
