CHICAGO — The Chicago city council is considering a new ordinance to offer photo ID cards to released prison inmates, undocumented ILLEGAL immigrants, transgender people and the homeless.
A city council committee passed the proposal this week.
Supporters say the program would help residents apply for city services and benefits without fear of being criminalized or discriminated against.
The proposal, which city hall officials helped draft, also would require city departments to improve language translation services for residents whose primary language is not English.
The ordinance still needs full city council approval.
