SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. —Deputies removed a 4-year-old boy and a baby girl from a filthy home after the children's mother called 911 and asked for a priest to exorcise demons from her son.

Spartanburg deputies said they were called to a home on Southstar Street on Sept. 20 by 23-year-old Danielle Emily Hughes, who said her son was possessed.

Deputies said Hughes earlier called a suicide hotline.

Deputies said they found the home in "complete disarray," with trash, filth and dead roaches throughout.
They said Hughes' bedroom had dirty diapers and half-empty baby bottles with spoiled milk on the floor.

There were gnats swarming in the kitchen and moldy food and spilled liquid throughout, with an extremely dirty refrigerator, deputies said.

Deputies said Hughes' 5-month-old daughter had bug bites all over her legs and there was no formula in the home for the baby.

Deputies said there was a pit bull outside the home that did not have food or water.

The children were taken into emergency protective custody and placed in the care of the Department of Social Services.

Deputies contacted animal control officers to take care of the dog.

Hughes was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.

She was charged with two counts of unlawful neglect of children.
