Controversial Billboard Ties Dating Apps to STDs

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation took direct aim at two of the nation's most popular hookup apps with a billboard linking the Apps to STDs.

The most popular hookup app for young people is fighting back against allegations that it promotes the spread sexually-transmitted diseases.

Tinder has reportedly sent a “cease and desist” letter to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

The AIDS fighting group has put up billboards near Tinder’s West Hollywood headquarters, linking casual hookup apps to the increased spread of chlamydia and gonorrhea.

“Mobile dating apps are rapidly altering the sexual landscape by making casual sex as easily available as ordering a pizza,” said Whitney Engeran-Cordova, Senior Director, Public Health Division for AHF. “In many ways, location-based mobile dating apps are becoming a digital bathhouse for millennials wherein the next sexual encounter can literally just be a few feet away—as well as the next STD.”

A spokeswoman for Tinder declined to comment for Patch. Grindr has not responded to a request for comment.

According to its website, Tinder is the number one dating site for young people 18 to 24-years old. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation claims that Grindr is the most popular location-based app for gay men with more than two million users daily.

“As one of the world’s largest gay platforms, we take this issue very seriously,” Grindr told the Los Angeles Times. “At the end of the day, we are all on the same side in this issue, and strive to work with our partners and advocacy groups to achieve similar goals. A more connected and informed gay community is a better thing for us all.”
