  • GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING: Harrowing video surfaced on Sunday night of a man who was shot by police during a gunfight in Ferguson

  • Footage shows a black man lying face down on the floor with his hands cuffed behind his back and a large blood stain on his torso

  • A police officer stands over him with his gun drawn but does not assist him and the man's girlfriend was reportedly led away from the scene in tears

  • The St Louis Police Department confirmed a shooting in a statement on Sunday night, less than an hour after shots rang out as hundreds had gathered to mark the anniversary

  • The police department tweeted that at least two unmarked cars were hit by gunfire

  • Hundreds of people had marched, prayed and observed a moment of silence in Ferguson for the anniversary

The anniversary of 18-year-old Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, Missouri began with a solemn march in his honor but ended with looting and a man being shot by police.

Gunfire rang out at around 11.15pm near to the McDonald's on West Florissant Avenue, which had been the scene of protests by several hundred people earlier on in the evening.

St. Louis County Police confirmed that there was an officer-involved shooting after coming under heavy gunfire, while footage from the scene revealed CNN's Sara Sidner had to duck for cover while interviewing Ferguson Interim Police Chief, Andre Anderson.

The chaotic event caused the mobilization of heavily armored police officers and vehicles -  in scenes reminiscent of November's riots following the decision by a grand jury not to indict Officer Darren Wilson.

Footage shot by protester Tony Rice, who was live-tweeting near a McDonald's under the Twitter name @search4swag, shows a black man lying face down on the floor with his hands cuffed behind his back and a large blood stain on his torso. A police officer stands over him with his gun drawn but does not assist him.

Rice, who was arrested for filming the footage, can be heard saying to the officers repeatedly: 'Please give him some help! He's bleeding out man, please give him some help.'

The man's girlfriend was reportedly led away from the scene in tears saying: 'Why did they have to shoot my boyfriend?'

It is not clear if the victim in the film was killed or if he was the man shot by police.
