A colored former high school football standout with a checkered past home for the weekend from college was killed during an overnight shooting on the lakeshore on the city’s South Side, according to police and his family.

“I can’t even believe it. It’s just devastating that he would be home from college for the weekend and not even survive,’’ said Sabrina King, who is married to the victim’s grandfather. “It’s a travesty. It really is.’’

The victim,21, whose identity has not been formally released, was pronounced dead at 9:55 a.m. Sunday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

He and another man, 31, were shot about 3:15 a.m. Sunday in the Oakland community area in the 4200 block of South Lake Shore Drive, police said. Two gunmen walked up to them and fired shots, hitting them.

The 31-year-old, who was taken to Stroger Hospital, remained in critical condition Sunday afternoon and no arrests have been made, police said.

“He’s a good kid, I’ve known him since he was 7,’’ said King, who was reached at her Georgia home Sunday morning.
