A suicidal male was shot and killed by a Greenfield police officer late Wednesday, Police Chief Brad Wentlandt said.
The shooting was reported at an apartment complex at S. 92nd St. and W. Waterford Ave., where officers were called shortly after 4 p.m., Wentlandt said.
According to Wentlandt, callers reported a distraught individual on a balcony of one of the apartments, where a police negotiator and crisis intervention specialist were also sent.
The officers negotiated with the person for about 90 minutes. Other officers, who believed that the person was not armed, entered the apartment.
After they entered, the person pulled a knife and attempted to stab an officer who discharged his weapon, striking the man, Wentlandt said.
No further information was to be released Wednesday night.
