A Northwest Indiana Amish man who was planning to get married next month drowned in Lake Michigan on Saturday night after he was swept off the Michigan City lighthouse pier by a large wave.

Earl Helmuth, 24, of Nappanee, Ind., fell into the lake about 6:30 p.m. as he was taking photographs with his fiancee and two other couples, said Indiana Department of Natural Resources state conservation officer Sgt. Shawn Brown, who said all six were Amish.

Helmuth, who did not know how to swim, was knocked into the water when a wave believed to be 8 to 10 feet high slammed into the end of the pier, which is a popular spot for taking pictures of Lake Michigan and the lighthouse.

Helmuth's fiancee and the two other couples also were knocked into the lake.

"They were taking photos from the pier and all of them were swept into the water," Brown said.
