LOUISVILLE, KY  - A Jefferson County Public School personnel action document reveals 30 of the districts bus drivers and substitute bus drivers resigned, retired or were terminated from early August to the middle of September.
Ads around Louisville are seeking more bus drivers, and boast $16 an hour salary and benefits to help “move students in the right direction.”

JCPS officials said the number of drivers who leave JCPS in August, is high because drivers return to work in August and some are “no-shows” due to new jobs or schedule changes. New hires also realize the demands of the job are not for them because of split hours and unique schedules.

However, the district’s bus driver union said trouble with behavioral issues may be responsible for forcing bus drivers to find other employment.

On Monday, a JCPS spokesperson said a fight broke out on a bus leaving Breckinridge Metropolitan. Metrosafe reported two juveniles were arrested at Broadway and Barrett Avenue.
According to JCPS spokeswoman Bonnie Hackbarth, the bus driver took the bus, and all 30 students, back to school where 28 students were asked to get off the bus.

Bus Union President John Stovall said incidents on the bus are often ignored by school officials, which is continually frustrating to drivers.

“A lot of them say, 'I don't need this, it's not worth the money and start seeking employment somewhere else,” Stovall said, “moral is so bad. It’s not because they aren't good people because they are. It’s because they try to do their job and drivers aren't getting the support from the district.”

Stovall is referring to support for discipline issues. He said the drivers write referrals for problem students, but school officials don't take action.

“A lot of times the principals don't answer the referrals,” Stovall said, “the bad thing is we're losing a lot of good drivers over this. Because when they do try and get the students to behave they don’t have any support from the school or the district.”

Stovall said for the past two years, bus drivers have been leaving JCPS.

“After awhile you're losing good people and they're getting frustrated because they don’t have the support of the district and they leave,” Stovall said.

Stovall said ultimately the lack of discipline for the students causing issues affects the safety of the other students on the bus.

A JCPS official said the number of resignations WAVE 3 News discovered-is normal and they will continually seek new bus driver hires for the 2015-2016 school year.
