A Champaign man was arrested Sunday morning and charged with murder and sexual assault three decades after he allegedly attacked and killed Kristina Wesselman, 15, in unincorporated DuPage County near Glen Ellyn, officials said.

Michael R. Jones, 62, was arrested in Champaign after the DuPage County Sheriff's Office received new information Sept. 10 regarding the 30-year-old cold case, according to a sheriff's office news release. Jones is being held in DuPage County Jail.

Jones was charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault, according to the release.

Wesselman was killed July 21, 1985. She was last seen walking home in unincorporated Glen Ellyn along a well-traveled path from Jewel near Butterfield Road and Illinois Highway 53, officials said.

Wesselman never returned home and was reported missing by her mother, officials said. Her body was found hours later in the field near the path where she was last seen walking.

"Over the last 30 years the Sheriff's Cold Case Unit has worked hundreds of leads that have sent them across the nation, and thousands of man hours have been spent to catch the killer in this horrendous crime," said DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba in the release.
