A Northbrook ATM user was able to foil an armed robbery attempt Wednesday night by driving away from a gun pointed at him, according to Northbrook police.

A man parked at the Chase bank drive-through at Dundee and Pfingsten roads reported that his car door was opened at about 9:45 p.m. by a man on foot, who pointed a handgun at him, said spokeswoman Sheryl Fayne-dePersio. The driver put the car in gear and drove away from the bank without a shot being fired.

"No demands were made, as there was no opportunity," Fayne-dePersio said. Neither the driver nor his passenger was hurt. The driver called police shortly afterward, but the armed robber wasn't found, she said.

She said that the ATM user and his passenger did not see any vehicle that might have been waiting for the robber. They did say that they might have seen a second person.

She said police warn that this is not an isolated incident and that other similar cases have taken place in recent weeks in other towns, all between 9 and 11 p.m. She said police advise ATM users to keep car doors locked.

The robber was described as a black man wearing dark clothes, with a black bandanna with white markings covering the lower part of his face, according to police. He was between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10 inches tall, about 180 pounds, with short black hair and no visible tattoos or markings on his clothes, police said.

The description was similar to that of a man who more successfully committed a crime at a Chase bank ATM in Elgin a month ago. In that case, a man walked up at about 10:30 p.m., pointed a gun at the driver and demanded her ATM card, according to Elgin police.

Police said the man removed cash from her account before she was able to flee the area and call police.
