ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Arraignment  took place Wednesday morning for two people arrested in connection with a homicide on the city's north side.
Less than two weeks after the incident on Norton Street, Rochester police have two suspects in custody. A mother and son have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Robert Pinckney.
James McCracken, 28, pleaded not guilty to murder. It was confirmed that parole officials have been looking for him for absconding. Also charged in Pinckney's death is Jacqueline Staples, 48. Her arraignment was postponed until Thursday morning.
On September 11, police got a call for a partially opened garage door and a barking dog. When they got there, they found Pinckney lying on the floor of what appeared to be an auto repair shop on Norton Street near N. Clinton Avenue. Family members told us Pinckney had been living and working as a mechanic at that location after his home recently foreclosed.
It's believed attempted robbery or robbery was the motive but the prosecutor wouldn't talk details.
"I really can't get into the motive and as I tried to explain to the family why is a question we always ask in homicides and most of the time we can't answer. James McCracken was a parole absconder at the time, parole had been looking for him and he was at large basically when this happened," said Assistant District Attorney, Kelly Wolford.
Although prosecutors won't talk motive, they do confirm that a video has been submitted as evidence that will show both the defendants leaving the scene of the crime.
Jacqueline Staples is scheduled for arraignment Thursday morning with an assigned attorney.
