Rina and Pasquale Fontanini died from carbon monoxide poisoning after they FORGOT to turn the car off after parking in their attached garage... I would like to know what their blood alcohol levels were when this happened....
A lawsuit filed on behalf of a Highland Park couple who died after their keyless car was left running in the garage blames the automaker for not providing an automatic engine shut-off.
The suit was filed in Lake County on behalf of Rina and Pasquale Fontanini, who died in June of carbon monoxide poisoning after their 2013 Lincoln MKS was left running in their attached garage.
The car was equipped with a keyless ignition, a relatively new convenience that critics say subverts years of driving habits and makes it too easy to leave a car running without realizing it.
That appeared to be the case with the Highland Park couple, whose son Cesare, a lieutenant in the Highland Park Fire Department, discovered his parents dead in their home.
Cesare Fontanini, who used to visit his parents frequently, said his father was awakened by a carbon monoxide detector, went to the garage and turned off the car ignition, but by then it was too late, and he collapsed and died.
"We're going to make a change in the industry," Cesare Fontanini said. "Ford and the other automakers and federal regulators knew there was a problem in 2011. We want to send a message to corporate America that safety comes first, not profit."
The couple's attorney, Edward McNabola, added: "Ford's failure to address this problem was a tragedy waiting to happen."
