An officer assisting northwest suburban Schaumburg police with a barricade situation shot a 31-year-old woman after she fired a round at the officer Saturday night, police said.

About 7:25 p.m., someone sent Schaumburg police a message through the Text-to-9-1-1 system that said their roommate was inside their condominium unit in the 1700 block of Maple Place, holding a gun and making suicidal comments, police said in a statement.

The person who texted exited the condo once police arrived, leaving the front door open. Officers entered and found the 31-year-old woman as described and “pleaded” with her to put the gun down, but she refused, police said.

She then closed the front door and refused to leave. Members of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System were called to help but could not convince the woman to put the weapon down, police said.

Shortly before midnight, the woman fired one shot out a window toward a NIPAS vehicle before leaving the condo and shooting at a NIPAS officer who was standing in a hallway, police said.

That officer, not affiliated with Schaumburg police, was “forced to return fire in order to stop the threat,” and the woman was shot twice, police said. She was taken to a hospital with injuries not thought to be life threatening, police said.

No one else was injured.

The woman shot was still in the hospital as of 7 a.m. and under police guard. Charges have not yet been filed.

Per protocol, the officer involved in the shooting is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit.
