Department Approved Semiautomatic Pistols and Ammunition
On the heels of the Department Directive published on July 21, 2015 (Department Approved Semiautomatic Pistols and Ammunition U04-02-01), the FOP and our attorney, along with other affected Unions, met with MLAS regarding the sudden change in the firearms Order. The new Order virtually would have eliminated all future purchases of .45 and .40 caliber weapons as of July 21, 2015 without any input from the Unions, or the Uniform Committees. It was explained that due to FBI information and cost effectiveness, the CPD is making the change only to allow chambered 9mm Luger (Parabellum) weapons for future use. The Lodge cited Section 21.2 of our Contract, which states: "The Department will apprise the Uniforms and Equipment Advisory Committee whenever any changes to the Uniforms and Personal Equipment Program are anticipated." The Department failed to comply with its obligations, and instead released the revise order on July 21, 2015 with any input from FOP.
As result of a meeting with MLAS, the Lodge secured a grace period through Friday August 28, 2015. Police Officers will now be able to register with the Gun Registration Section any Department approved .45 or .40 caliber weapon, and have the opportunity to qualify with these weapons before the 9mm semiautomatic pistol only change takes effect.
On July 28, 2015 a revision was made to U04-02-01. See AMC 21932 or Department Directives for particulars.
