The Los Angeles Police Department on Wednesday morning will honor actor Martin Milner, who gave the nation one of its first looks at the LAPD through the television show “Adam-12.”
Milner died on Sept. 7, but through reruns will live on as the star of “Route 66” and, for veteran law enforcement nationwide, the iconic Adam-12 in which he portrayed Officer Pete Malloy from 1968-75.
Milner and actor Kent McCord, who portrayed rookie Jim Reed, shaped the public’s image of the LAPD at the time.
“Adam 12 and Martin Milner embodied the spirit of the LAPD to millions of viewers,” LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said at the time of Milner’s death at age 83. “His depiction of a professional and tough yet compassionate cop led to thousands of men and women applying to become LAPD officers, including me.”
Show memorabilia and LAPD equipment from the era will be included, as will speakers including McCord, Chief Beck, Milner’s son Andy Milner, Producer Tom Williams and retired lieutenant and technical advisor to the show William Rinehart.
The event is free and expected to last about an hour beginning at 10 a.m. at the Ronald F. Deaton Civic Auditorium, 100 w. First Street, Los Angeles.
